Alpha 2 is Released
Spirit of Glace Alpha 2 is ready. This update is all about Glace's core movement abilities.
The concept of dashing to stick to a wall, then launching off as a separate action, is gone. Instead we now have a wall bounce that's way more like to the classic game. You simply dash against a wall to trigger a wall bounce, and Glace will rocket upwards at an angle. If you continue to hold the dash button, you can chain wall bounces to quickly navigate certain obstacles. Dash now has a dedicated button (Right trigger or D key), and you no longer need to be in the air to dash. You also no longer need to hold a direction. You'll always dash in the direction you're facing.
Glace can still climb walls, but it's not longer triggered by dashing (obviously). Climbing now also has a dedicated button (Left trigger or W key), which you hold to grab onto a wall, and let go to drop from the wall. For now, you can climb indefinitely, but I plan on limiting how far you can climb later.
If you're a keyboard player, get ready to learn some new controls. Apologies as we still don't yet have a way to customize these, but I promise we'll have it later. For now, here are the new keyboard controls:
A jumps. S attacks. D dashes, W climbs. E to activate. And arrow keys to move around.
These changes were made based on player feedback from Alpha 1. I hope you like them!
Below is a complete list of changes made. Much love and thank you for your support!
- Dashing against walls causes Glace to bounce up at a 45 degree angle. You can hold down to bounce downward.
- Glace can dash left or right based on the direction he's facing. Up dash has been removed. You don't need to be in the air to dash.
- Dash has a dedicated button (Right trigger or D key)
- Glace doesn't slow down as much at the end of a dash.
- Glace's movement speed is 20% faster, including climbing.
- Completely new keyboard controls. Arrow keys to move, A to jump, S to attack, D to dash, W to climb.
- Wall climbing is changed from dash-to-stick to hold-button-to-grab, if that makes any sense. There's a dedicated button to climb now (Left trigger or W key)
- Glace can jump off walls that he's climbing. Hold away from the wall and press jump. You'll be able to jump upwards too later.
- Glace will now automatically pull up to ledges if you climb close enough to them.
- Glace doesn't perform ledge pull-ups quite as easily. It shouldn't happen on accident as much and should look more natural.
- Fixed case where Glace could climb the air, like a naughty blob. (thank you Mice and neropatti).
- Squish moves and reacts a little faster (needs more work).
- Squish spawns health less often.
- Glace shouldn't be able to dash backwards anymore (thanks neropatti)
- Fixed the shooter bot's smoke stack sometimes shooting smoke downward instead of up (thank you Lynn).
- Fixed some tiles in Statue Hill and Moonflower Field (thank you Lynn).
- Fixed color on grassy one way platforms so they don't appear to be in the background (thanks Sham bam bamina)
- Removed rogue magenta pixels from a few places (thanks Lynn). Fun fact, these are special pixels the game uses to center sprites correctly. I usually remove them after the centering data is written.
- Other small things you might notice. Or not.
